The Gottman Assessment: What to Expect

Before your second couples therapy session, you’ll receive a link to complete the Gottman Relationship Assessment. Many clients wonder what it is and what will be done with the results.

The Gottman Assessment is a research-based tool designed to offer a comprehensive picture of your relationship. It looks at areas such as friendship, conflict management, trust, emotional connection, intimacy, and shared meaning. Importantly, it also identifies strengths—not just problems.

This assessment is not about judgment or diagnosis. There are no “good” or “bad” scores. Instead, it gives language and structure to experiences couples often feel but struggle to articulate. It allows therapy to move beyond repeating the same arguments and toward understanding what sustains them.

For many couples, reviewing the results together is a moment of clarity. Patterns begin to make sense. Differences feel less personal and more understandable. Therapy becomes more focused, more intentional, and less reactive.

The assessment helps ensure that your work together is guided by evidence, not assumptions—and tailored to the unique dynamics of your relationship.
